April and May is a busy time for the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School when over 30 schools integrate Sailing and Watersports programmes into their school syllabus. The programmes vary in length and hours, however, we find they are particularly suited to college students how may have time off in the week and can fill the time, earning while they pass on sailing skills.
What’s involved with the role
Our programmes run Monday to Friday for three hours each, between the hours of 9am and 5pm. We have schools every day of the week.
We staff the week in two ways. If there’s a particular set of hours that you would be able to work and there’s a group needing an instructor we’ll book you in for that, and can do so weeks in advance if you like. We also use an app that allows you select from available shifts, usually 1-2 weeks ahead. The key point is that we won’t demand you do a particular shift – you can always (and are encouraged) to prioritise your studies.
The sessions run for about 3 hours on average. Each will be lead by an experienced instructor who will take charge of the lesson plans, session plans and ensuring that the outcomes are met. You’ll be there to teach, not to worry about admin/progression. Courses are supported on shore by administrative/reception staff while all programmes are underway, allowing the instructors focus on teaching. These staff also deal with all certification and course follow up for the instructors.
Sailing takes place in Toppers, Picos, RS Zests and other doublehanded boats depending on the students experience levels. Most students are beginners, although we do get some who have sailed before and we place an emphasis on providing something for them too.
Instructors would assist with allocating wetsuits and gear, training the students to rig, coaching and safety on the water and assist with tidy up / putting the gear away at the end of the session.
Payment is on the following Monday for all hours in the preceding week. We pride ourselves on making payments on time – we were all students once and know how important the bank balance can be.
General Information
Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience required:
- Hold a valid Irish Sailing Dinghy Instructor Certificate
- First Aid certificate that is valid for the duration of your contract
- Garda Vetting – through Irish Sailing
- Previous experience of delivering Irish Sailing SBSS courses.
- Experience of working as part of a small team, ideal but not essential
- Previous customer service experience, ideal but not essential

Successful applicants will teach on our busy School’s Programme. There are additional weekend opportunities that run all year round, as well as full time Summer positions that we would typically staff from internal staff pools. Once you’re a member of the team these opportunities are open to you.
If you’re an experienced instructor, great! If you’re a newly qualified instructor, no problem. We’ll provide all the additional training required to run our programmes.
