Assistant Instructor Training Programme

2023 Programme Now Open for Applications

The Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School is delighted to launch our training programme for aspiring instructors for 2023.

Starting this Summer coaching and training for aspiring instructors will be delivered as part of the Assistant Instructor In-Training Programme, which will run over the months of June, July and August.

In keeping with our standard policy, we will only accept attendees of this programme to participate in the Dinghy Instructor Training Programme running over the Autumn/Winter months.

Pre-Requisites

We recommend that candidates speak to the 15-17 years group head about their suitability for the programme. We would recommend a candidate being at YSS Stage 4, or higher, and being at least 15 years old by the 1st of April 2023. Candidates who feel they can reach this standard of sailing by the end of the Summer may be welcomed onto the programme.

Please note: we are accepting applications from candidates aged 14 years however, we will be limiting their assistance to the 4-6 year old Sea Explorer groups.

If you feel you do not meet the criteria above, please still do apply. We’ll chat with you about what can be done.

How it will work

The Assistant Instructor In-Training Programme consists of two parts.

The first will involve on the job training, where Assistant Instructors will join children’s groups, under the supervision of our experienced Group Head Instructors and Senior Instructors.

The second part will involve specific and tailored coaching over a series of weekly meetings after the courses have concluded. These meetings will take place each Tuesday from June to August (6pm-8pm) and be led by a Senior Instructor who will work on developing communication and sailing skills as well as teaching techniques. Trainees will split their time between sailing on summer courses and assisting on groups. Regardless of what activity they are undertaking, they are invited to the weekly training meetings.

Attendance is not mandatory and missing dates is not an issue.

The Senior Instructor will also be responsible monitoring the trainees progress over the course of the Summer and will provide guidance to these individuals and receive reports from the Head Instructors. At the end of the programme, the Senior Instructors will be responsible for recommending an invitation be issued to a trainee to attend the next step, the Instructor Training Modules.

Meeting Dates (Tuesdays 6pm-8pm)

  • June: 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th
  • July: 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th
  • August: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd

This programme is open to Summer Course attendees as well as 15-17 years sailors from the Junior Club. Candidates will not be invited to assist every week of the summer, as it is important that they practice their sailing skills as well as undertake on the job training.
